Pulse oximetry is based on the absorption of light in tissues (tissue blood vessels), where light is scattered by hemoglobin in both arterial and venous blood, located in the tissues between the light source and the receiver. Direct illumination photodetectors are commonly used. The simulator (finger phantom) consists of light emitting diodes and photodiodes. The photodiodes receive the light emitted by the pulse oximeter LEDs and synchronize the simulator to the pulse oximeter sensor. The LEDs on the pulse oximeter sensor illuminate red and infrared light intensities that correspond to the simulated SpO2.
