  • Bergamot essential oil is extracted from the ripe and unripe fruits of the bergamot orange tree. This essential oil, which smells citrusy yet sweet, is perfect for creating feelings of relaxation and happiness. It is useful in the treatment of urinary tract infections, skin problems and strengthens the functions of the liver and stomach.

Bergamot essential oil is used in aromatherapy to treat depression, stress, tension, self-confidence, fear and hysteria. It is useful in treating skin infections such as wounds, psoriasis, herpes and eczema. This oil is said to help sufferers of SAD (seasonal depression), PMS, binge eating, postnatal depression, colds and flu. Bergamot oil is a favorite in aromatherapy and is used in vaporizers, massages and added to bath water. Experts advise using this oil with caution for sensitive skin, if it is exposed to sunlight after application - it can cause skin burns. Avoid the sun if this oil has been used on the skin.

The name "Bergamot" comes from the city of Bergamo in Lombardy, Italy, where bergamot essential oil was first sold. From the 16th century bergamots were cultivated in Mediterranean countries such as Italy and Greece. Bergamot has long been used in the perfumery and food industries (Earl Gray tea). Although the essential oil has only recently been extracted, the fruit and its essence and flavor have been used in traditional medicine for hundreds of years.
