What are walkers and what are they for?

Walkers/rollators help people with mobility difficulties walk safely, maintain balance, and reduce the risk of falls. When choosing, it is important to know that there are several main types - they are designed for different needs.

There is a wide range of walkers on the market, adapted to the different needs of users. Understanding the various models will help you choose the most suitable assistive device. Walkers made of steel will be heavier, but significantly cheaper than those made of aluminum, although all other features will be very similar or identical.

Main types of strollers:

Simple walkers (without wheels) - do not have wheels, the entire frame is placed on the floor, so they are very stable. This walker has four rubber non-slip feet that ensure stability.

They are usually lightweight, foldable. Suitable after operations (hip or knee), suitable if the user can lift the walker with each step.

Walkers with two wheels – designed for people who need stability and easier movement. Wheels in the front, rubber feet in the back, therefore not suitable for people who have difficulty lifting the walker.

Walkers with four wheels (rollators) – suitable for longer walks outdoors or in shops. Often have a seat and basket, dense brakes. Less stable than ordinary walkers, therefore not suitable for people who have difficulty maintaining balance. Such walkers are assistive devices that facilitate the movement of patients with various motor disorders. They can be used as an aid for patients after operations (lower limbs), who cannot use crutches, have coordination disorders, patients with minor lower limb dysfunction or weakness. Used in patients whose balance disorder prevents them from moving independently in an upright position, as well as in various circulatory disorders. Walkers can also be used as an aid for elderly patients.

Walkers with forearm support (rehabilitation) - suitable after neurological diseases (stroke), if the hands are weak or longer rehabilitation is needed. Allows you to maintain a straighter posture, reduces the load on the wrists.

Main selection criteria:

Stability - the more support points, the more stable. If you will use it at home - smaller wheels or no wheels, if outdoors - larger wheels and brakes.

Height adjustment - choose a walker whose height can be adjusted according to the person's height. The handles should be at wrist height when the person is standing upright. High walkers with arm support (elbow walkers, high walkers with a table) are very often chosen by seniors or disabled people not only during rehabilitation after operations or injuries, but also after rehabilitation. High walkers with arm support are used in special cases when more support is needed than that provided by a regular walker. Some models have electric or hydraulic height adjustment, which allows you to precisely adjust the walker to your individual needs.

Maximum weight - most walkers can withstand 100-150 kg, but you need to check the limit of a specific model.

Additional accessories - if you need space to store or carry things, consider a walker with a basket. This can be especially useful when shopping or traveling. For those who often stop to rest, a walker with a seat provides an opportunity to rest comfortably.
