Electric scooters are electrically powered technical aids for people with long-term mobility problems. They help you to maintain your independence, improve your quality of life and allow you to participate more actively in everyday activities. However, they are not automatically available to all people with mobility problems - certain medical and functional impairment criteria must be met.

Who can be prescribed an electric scooter?

According to the information provided by the TPPC, electric scooters are available to people with long-term or permanent mobility impairments that make it impossible for the person to walk a moderate distance without assistance.

The main groups of diseases or conditions for which this technical aid may be prescribed are:

Neurological disorders

- Multiple sclerosis

- Cerebral palsy

- Parkinson's disease

- Post-stroke (where partial paralysis or weakness persists)

- Spinal cord lesions (e.g. paraplegia, tetraplegia)

Orthopaedic and rheumatic diseases

- Severe joint deformities (e.g. in advanced rheumatoid arthritis)

- Severe spinal lesions or deformities (e.g. scoliosis with neurological disorders)

- Amputations where prosthesis is not possible or appropriate

 Muscular diseases and degenerative disorders

- Muscular dystrophies

- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

- Other progressive neuromuscular diseases

Severe heart or respiratory failure

- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with severe exercise limitation

- Heart failure in functional class IV (NYHA)

Other specific conditions

- Oncological diseases, if they cause irreversible mobility disability

- Elderly patients, if permanent mobility disability is confirmed

What criteria are assessed?

The measure is awarded only after assessment:

- Functional status - whether the person is able to operate the scooter independently;

- Environmental conditions - whether the living environment allows the safe use of the device;

- Not recommended for people with significant cognitive impairment, visual impairment or behavioural problems that interfere with safe driving.

How do I get an electric scooter?

1. You need to see your GP or a specialist (e.g. a rehabilitation therapist) who will assess your medical condition.

2. The doctor fills in a special prescription document for the technical aid.

3. This document can be taken to the Technical Assistance Device Centre (TADC) or its branch.

Conclusion

An electric scooter is not a luxury, but an indispensable aid for people with severe mobility problems. It is not available to everyone, but only to those whose health condition meets clear criteria. These tools allow people with disabilities to live with dignity, independence and active participation in society.
